The North Allegheny School District is revamping its proposed policy on background checks for parents who volunteer in the schools.
School board President Chris Jacobs said Aug. 27 that the district will seek more community feedback on the policy, which had been scheduled for a vote that evening.

While I completely agree that instructional volunteers should have clearances as they are alone with our kids, I do not understand the need for assistive volunteers to have them. I was in the classroom just yesterday doing a TAG presentation and was with a teacher the entire time. Assistive volunteers are not alone with the children. I just don’t see a need or any value added. Feels like a hurdle for volunteering
I have an issue that the parents are being held to a higher standard compared to the staff. Dr Scherrer said that staff only goes through background checks and clearances once, when they’re hired, and after that the teacher just needs to sign a paper saying they have done nothing wrong in the past year.
